God Meets Our Needs at the Cross

2 Corinthians 9:8

“And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.”

What is the fundamental “SPIRITUAL” need we all have?

  • Forgiveness (academic answer at least) (Hebrews 7:26)

John Powell (Jesuit Priest) says we have a fundamental “HUMAN” need though.

  • Quote paragraphs 1-3 on P.13 of “Secret Of Staying In Love”
  • William Glaser (Reality Therapy): The great needs of people are 1) to love 2) to receive love 3) to have a high self worth
  • Alvin Neal: People have three great needs: 1) to give love 2) to receive love 3) a personal feeling of significance

Recently I have been telling people about Crabb’s “Effective Biblical Counseling”.

  • God created you with needs – needs that you cannot meet yourself.
  • This begins as a baby (food, shelter) and continues throughout life (the need for someone to freely choose to love me)
  • Needs aren’t bad. They are reality.
  • He also agrees that the essential need is the need to be loved
  • If this need is met, then we have high self-worth
  • Crabb breaks it up to 2 kinds of needs: 1) security 2) significance
  • He points to the curses of Adam and Eve
  • Eve was cursed to bear children in pain (her need for security is met through family)
  • Adam was cursed to work by the sweat of his brow (his need for significance would be met by work)
  • Conclusion: People behave as they do not necessarily because they are evil but because they want their needs met.
  • You WILL DO whatever YOU BELIEVE will meet your needs.
  • It comes down to what you really DEEP DOWN BELIEVE.

Today my goal is to help you be convinced DEEP DOWN that your needs are really met at the cross

Romans 8:31-32
What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?

  • At the cross God “PROVED” that he loves you
  • At the cross God meets our need for SECURITY.
    • Rom 8 says that if God has given his son for you then there is nothing he won’t give up for you.
  • At the cross God meets our need for SIGNIFICANCE.
    • You are important to God!
    • Jesus didn’t die for us.
    • He died for you.
    • You are significant to God.

Matthew 6:8
Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

  • God knows your needs

Matthew 6:31-34
So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

  • Our needs are and will be met

Matthew 7:7-11
Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.  “Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!

  • We need a proper perspective on who God is.

Philippians 4:19
And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.

Psalm 34:8-10
Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in him. Fear the LORD, you his saints, for those who fear him lack nothing. The lions may grow weak and hungry, but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing.
